What is Public Domain?

Sunday March 4, 2007

Unrated: (0)

The copyright in a song usually lasts from the time the song is written until 70 years after the songwriter's death. At that time, it is said that the song is in the "Public Domain", sometimes just written as "PD". This means that many of the older hymns and songs may be reproduced freely. However, care should be taken even with Public Domain songs for the following reasons:-

* Many PD songs have had new melodies or arrangements added, in which case, permission for reproduction must be sought from the new copyright owner.
* In some cases, the words may have been updated or modified. Those new versions could still be in copyright.
* Even if a song is in PD, when photocopying that song, permission must still be sought from the copyright owner of the publication in which the song appears.
